Aerial San Francisco

Yesterday, I left Portland just as a snow storm was moving into town. I had expected major delays at the airport, but it turns out that getting out of Portland was cake. An hour and twenty minutes, we were directly over San Francisco on a very clear day. Luckily, I had planned my seat selection with the approach vector I knew we’d fly and had my D700 with the new Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G at hand. Even better, I had a moderately clean window.

Shooting through airplane windows and several miles of atmosphere is never a recipe for sharp photos. The incredibly clear day, however, along with using a fantastic lens, really worked in my favor. There’s an amazing amount of detail in the photo. Here’s a 100% crop of where the new Bay Bridge is being constructed:

At a guess, the construction on the bridge is at least 5 miles away from where I was sitting. For a shot that I can’t get any other way, and which has to be taken through crappy warped plastic, I’ll take that in a heartbeat.

Beautiful. I really have to keep trying shots from the plane, warped plastic and all. Still liking the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G?

James,

Really interested to hear your impressions of the new Nikkor 50mm. I'm a Canon owner looking to switch to the D700 - 50mm is my preferred lens (grew up on OM2s & OM4s with 50mm Zuiko lenses) & if the new Nikkor 50mm is good enough I'll switch.

Very nice indeed. Where did you get the info about the exact flight route?

I didn't have absolute solid info on this one, though I've been known to ask the pilot as we board. But, I fly in/out of SFO all the time and have learned the approaches that they take on the typical patterns. It's only when the weather is really whack that you don't come over the top of SF like this when you are on a flight from the northwest.

Wow, excellent pictures. More important than a good lense is a clean window (inside and outside) I guess.

Really great shot!!! I cannot decide between Nikon D700 and Canon 5DMKII. Which to buy? Any suggestion would be really appreciated :)
BTW, after having seen this shot I would buy a D700, but yesterday I was a Canon guy
